| The Survival Games: Intro to Survival Skills + Competition |
| Our society may not have devolved into dystopia with rogue districts in open revolt against the capital just yet, but that doesn't mean we can't have a little fun in the woods while we wait. If a certain blockbuster trilogy has you wondering how your survival skills stack up, volunteer for this revolutionary Adventure: entry into the "Survival Games"—a one-day introductory survival skills course and competition on a private woodland estate in the Shenandoah Valley.Check in begins at 9:30 a.m. at the Advanced Survival Training facility in Fredericksburg, Virginia, (round-trip transportation from 918 F Street available for an additional $30 on select dates) where our LivingSocial staff will be waiting to help us get ready for an all-day introductory experience that will put our survival skills to the test. (We'll be out in the woods and exposed to the elements, so be sure to bring weather-appropriate clothing, deep woods bug spray, snacks, and a personal water container.) From there, we'll divide into groups and head out onto a beautiful ten-acre woodland property for a round robin of hands-on lessons in basic survival skills: knot-tying and trap-making, fire-starting, shelter-building, primitive archery, and primitive cooking.Once our skills are sharp, it's time for some fun: the Survival Games. We'll begin with all 50 competitors and progressively whittle down the field with a variety of survival competitions—including team shelter-building; tug-of-war; and a final head-to-head individual challenge to test our newly acquired primitive archery and fire starting skills—until the one person has been declared the victor. Since there's no room for hunger in these games, we'll cap off the day with a smoke-pit barbecue dinner courtesy of Blue Dog BBQ. The dinner menu includes pulled pork sandwiches, grilled quarter chickens, veggie burgers, zucchini bake, and cole slaw. As we replenish our energy reserves, we'll take part in an awards ceremony for the winner of the day who will take home the prize: their very own survival gear pack sponsored by our friends over at Survival Straps who want to make sure we are always equipped to survive in any situation. Win or lose, after this Adventure, we'll know: The odds are always in favor of fun. |
