| From marble monuments for past presidents to museums filled with thousands-years-old artifacts, DC is a hotbed of history. Experience a slice of this city's past when Cultural Tourism DC presents an afternoon tea at the Willard InterContinental hotel with Champagne, live jazz, an hour-long historic tour of the hotel, and a gift bag to take home ($60). The events are held on select weekends starting April 22, and gratuity and all other fees are included.You'll start your afternoon with a glass of Champagne in the hotel's Peacock Alley, a grand room with dark wood trim and red-velvet furniture. White-glove servers will treat you to a proper, English-style experience, complete with organic teas. Choose from five finger sandwiches, such as open-face egg salad with fennel and chives, smoked maple salmon with lemon butter and micro celery on pumpernickel, or free-range chicken salad with pecans and tarragon. Move on to scones with lemon curd, Devonshire cream, and fruit preserves. Finish with a lineup of pastries that includes a lemon-meringue tart, chocolate éclair, and strawberry shortcake.While you sip tea, historian Dr. Cindy Gueli will give a presentation on The Willard and its place in DC history. Dr. Gueli will then lead small groups through the stately 19th-century hotel, which dates back more than 150 years. Given that the hotel has played host to every US president since 1853, we'd say it's just as historic as one of those majestic memorials on the Mall. |
